Drivers attribute their short trips to high sales

Commuters in Accra continue to face significant hardship as persistent urban transport shortages leave many stranded during peak hours.
Commercial drivers, however, say the crisis is largely caused by high daily sales targets set by vehicle owners, rather than driver negligence. Collins Owusu, a driver at Bortianor Junction, explained:
“Drivers are not to blame. Some owners demand daily sales as high as GHS1,000. To meet these targets, we are forced to operate short trips, especially in the evenings, leaving many passengers stranded.”
At major bus terminals across the city, including Old Barrier, Tetegu, and Mallam Junction, commuters reported long queues and repeated transfers just to complete relatively short journeys.
One passenger described the ordeal: “I had to take a bus from Tuba to Kasoa Toll Booth, then to Mallam Junction, and from there to Kaneshie just to reach Accra.”
The situation highlights ongoing challenges in Accra’s public transport system and the strain on commuters, particularly during evening peak hours.
