Four students arrested over violent disturbances at Wa Technical Institute
9th December 2025
The Upper West Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Yiribaare, has confirmed the arrest of four students in connection with the violent disturbances at the Wa Technical Institute.
In an interview with Channel One TV, he described the incident as a grave act of indiscipline that resulted in extensive damage to school property. He explained that the chaos erupted after some students resisted routine disciplinary measures. The unrest was triggered when students repeatedly ignored warnings against wearing unauthorised uniforms and using mobile phones on campus.
According to DCOP Yiribaare, a group of students became aggressive when authorities attempted to enforce the rules, leading to a confrontation that quickly escalated into violence. Several school facilities were vandalised, including six vehicles parked on the compound. Windowpanes at the administration block and the multi-purpose hall were also smashed.
He stated that police officers responded swiftly after receiving complaints about the disturbances.
DCOP Yiribaare also disclosed that police are investigating the school’s domestic bursar after food items belonging to the institution were reportedly found in her possession. He indicated that the case would be forwarded to court should she be found culpable.
Updating the media on a separate case, he noted that on December 5 in Saawie, officers responding to a complaint were allegedly attacked and disarmed by some youth. Police reinforcements later arrested nine suspects. Seven have since been put before court, while two were released after interrogation.
