Francis Amuzu commits to Ghana, says World Cup not the motivation
21st October 2025
Francis Amuzu, the former Belgian youth international, has reaffirmed his decision to represent Ghana, stating that his choice is rooted in pride, not driven by the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 26-year-old Gremio forward, born in Accra but raised in Belgium, previously turned down a national team invitation in 2022. However, following Ghana’s qualification for their fifth World Cup appearance, Amuzu has now made his commitment clear.
“I was born in Ghana, so I’m happy they qualified for the World Cup. It’s a wonderful tournament to play in,” he told a Brazilian outlet.
Amuzu’s declaration has sparked mixed reactions, with some fans and pundits questioning the timing of his decision. But speaking to Asempa FM, the former Anderlecht winger emphasized that his desire to play for Ghana goes deeper than tournament opportunity.
“If it’s for the World Cup, it will be nice. If it’s after the World Cup, it’s also nice… I will be happy. It is a dream for me to play for the national team of Ghana.”
“I know I have to perform well to get a call-up. If it comes, good. If it doesn’t, I have to work harder.”
With Ghana preparing for the 2026 World Cup in Canada, USA, and Mexico, Amuzu’s form in Brazil could make him a valuable addition to Otto Addo’s squad, especially given his European pedigree and South American experience.
