The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) vice-presidential candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has assured that an NPP government would return all seized excavators confiscated during the fight against illegal mining.

Addressing the chiefs and residents of Prestea Huni Valley and Mpohor in the Western Region, Dr Prempeh emphasised that the party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has no plans to ban small-scale mining.

This pledge comes amid growing pressure for the government to halt small-scale mining to protect the environment, especially water bodies.

Dr. Prempeh reiterated the NPP’s stance on supporting small-scale mining, provided it is conducted responsibly, without causing environmental harm.

He stressed that, the party prefers regulating the sector over imposing outright bans.

“Small-scale mining helps families earn a living. Many miners supported the NDC in Wassa, but now they [the NDC] talk about using force against them. That must stop. We won’t resort to violence,” Dr. Prempeh said.

“We will return the seized excavators, allowing you to work peacefully and contribute to the community’s development. Dr. Bawumia will not collapse small-scale mining.”

He further clarified that, while certain harmful practices, such as using equipment on water bodies are unacceptable, those participating in the government’s community mining scheme would be allowed to continue their operations.
