Ghana is set to move forward with two major infrastructure projects—the Volivo Bridge and the Kumasi Inner Ring Road—following renewed discussions with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) at the ongoing IMF/World Bank Spring Meetings.

The Finance Minister, Cassiel Ato Forson, announced the development after a meeting with JICA Senior Vice President Ando Naoki, where talks focused on Ghana’s economic recovery and priority infrastructure projects.

Dr Forson said Ghana has now moved past the economic crisis of 2022, adding that the country’s debt trajectory has improved and is expected to return to a moderate risk of debt distress.

On the Volivo Bridge project, Mr Naoki expressed confidence that, given Ghana’s improved macroeconomic stability, JICA is likely to secure additional funding to support its implementation. He also indicated that the contractor is expected to mobilise by the end of the year to begin construction.

He further provided an update on the Kumasi Inner Ring Road project, noting that the tender process is currently underway. Once procurement is completed, the project is expected to proceed to the construction phase.

The Kumasi Inner Ring Road project is designed to improve urban mobility by upgrading a 3.2-kilometre stretch between the Santasi and Ahodwo roundabouts. It will also include the installation of modern traffic signals, upgrades to pedestrian facilities, improvements to drainage systems, and enhanced connectivity between the Santasi Roundabout and the N8 corridor.
