Ghanaian woman fatally shot in Hamilton Canada

A Ghanaian woman, identified as Belinda Sarkodie, was fatally shot on the afternoon of Friday, July 11, 2025, in Downtown Hamilton, Toronto, Canada.
The tragic incident occurred around 5:00 p.m. near Jackson Square on King Street West, between MacNab and James Streets.
Belinda, originally from Tafo in Kumasi and an alumna of the University of Cape Coast, had moved to Canada as an international student. According to eyewitnesses, she was out running errands when she was struck by gunfire.
Emergency responders pronounced her dead at the scene. Another man was also injured during the shooting but survived with non-life-threatening injuries.
A Ghanaian eyewitness at the scene, visibly shaken, revealed that Belinda had simply gone to get some items from the market moments before the shooting occurred.
The motive behind the attack is still unknown, and authorities are yet to determine if she was deliberately targeted or an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire.
The Hamilton Police Service has launched an investigation and confirmed they are looking for a white male suspect who fled the area after the incident.
They are appealing to the public for any information or video footage captured between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to aid in the case.
The death of Belinda Sarkodie has sent shockwaves through the Ghanaian community in Canada and Kumasi, as friends and loved ones struggle to come to terms with the senseless loss of a young woman with a promising future.
