GNFS launches nationwide vehicle fire extinguisher compliance exercise
18th December 2025
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has announced that, starting Thursday, December 18, 2025, it will roll out a nationwide vehicle fire extinguisher compliance exercise to ensure that all vehicles are equipped with functional and accessible fire extinguishers.
The initiative will be led by the GNFS Fire Safety Compliance Taskforce, in collaboration with the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service. According to a statement released on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, the exercise seeks to enforce the legal requirement for drivers and vehicle owners to carry at least one GNFS-certified or embossed portable fire extinguisher in their vehicles.
During the exercise, officials will carry out on-the-spot inspections, issue GNFS certification tags for approved extinguishers, and provide guidance on proper use in line with the Ghana National Fire Service Act, 1997 (Act 537). The taskforce will also engage transport unions and associations nationwide to raise awareness about fire prevention and preparedness.
Vehicle owners are required to ensure their fire extinguishers are in good working condition, including checking pressure gauges, expiry dates, and tamper seals, and that extinguishers are securely mounted and easily accessible. Drivers will also receive training on safe extinguisher use and be encouraged to maintain other essential safety equipment, such as warning triangles and first-aid kits, in their vehicles.
The GNFS emphasised that every second counts in a vehicle fire, noting that having a certified, functional extinguisher within reach could mean the difference between a minor incident and a major tragedy.
The Service reiterated its commitment to improving road safety nationwide through intensified public education and strict enforcement of fire safety regulations.
