Gov't extends night curfew in Nkwanta amid ongoing security concerns
19th January 2026
The Ministry of the Interior has announced a fresh extension of curfew hours for Nkwanta Township and nearby communities in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region, acting on the advice of the Oti Regional Security Council.
In a statement issued on January 19, 2026, the Ministry said the revised curfew will take effect immediately, restricting movement from 10:00 pm to 5:00 am, starting Monday, January 19, 2026.
Authorities say the measure is aimed at stabilising the security situation and preventing further disturbances in the area.
The government has appealed to traditional leaders, opinion leaders, youth groups, and residents to remain calm and adopt peaceful approaches in resolving disputes, stressing that dialogue and restraint are essential to restoring lasting peace in the municipality.
Alongside the curfew, officials reaffirmed that a complete ban on the possession of arms, ammunition, and offensive weapons remains firmly in place across Nkwanta Township and its environs.
The Ministry warned that security agencies have been directed to enforce the directive strictly, adding that any person found with prohibited weapons will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
