Only 1.2 million Ghanaians currently pay taxes, a situation attributed to limited public education and hesitancy among many citizens to fulfill their tax obligations, according to Mr. Cephas Makafui Zokah, a Compliance Officer at the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
Speaking at a tax sensitisation forum for artisanal workers in Sunyani, Mr. Zokah noted that the GRA is conducting a nationwide campaign to educate the public, particularly informal sector workers, on the importance of tax compliance and the need to broaden the nation’s tax base.
The forum, held in the Bono Region, brought together electricians, carpenters, plumbers, hairdressers, traders, masons, tailors, and apprentices from Berekum and Sunyani Municipalities.
During the event, Mr. Zokah introduced participants to the GRA’s Modified Taxation Scheme (MTS), an online platform designed to simplify tax registration, payment, and filing for businesses in the informal sector. He guided attendees through the registration process and encouraged them to use the system to meet their tax obligations.
“The MTS will grow tax revenue, increase compliance among targeted groups, enhance fairness and equity in the tax system, and reduce administrative pressures,” he explained.
Mr. Festus Onomah-Quansah, Sunyani Area Director of the GRA, added that the MTS is flexible and enables taxpayers to pay their dues conveniently. He urged all Ghanaians, especially informal sector workers, to demonstrate patriotism by voluntarily paying their taxes.
