“I thought a national leader had arrived” – Akosua Serwaa breaks silence after return to Ghana
12th January 2026
Akosua Serwaa, the widow of legendary Highlife musician Daddy Lumba, has spoken publicly for the first time since returning to Ghana from Germany, describing her dramatic welcome at the Kotoka International Airport as both overwhelming and deeply touching.
She arrived in Accra on 9 January 2026 to an outpouring of love from supporters, admirers and well-known media personalities, including Ohemaa Woyeje and Sally Mann.
The crowd, which had gathered long before her flight landed, turned the airport into an emotional scene of chants, prayers and solidarity.
In a statement issued the following day, 10 January, Akosua Serwaa revealed that she never imagined the reception was meant for her.
“When I walked into the arrival hall and saw a huge crowd ahead, I honestly thought a national figure had arrived on the same flight. It was only when I got closer that I realised the people were there for me – not a president or minister, but Daddy Lumba’s widow,” she said.
She explained that the moment moved her deeply, coming after what she described as one of the most painful periods of her life. Akosua Serwaa singled out Team Legal Wives, the women’s group that has publicly supported her, for special appreciation.
“Your prayers, encouragement, advocacy and love sustained me when words failed me. What you showed at the airport was not just support for me, but a powerful message about unity, truth and justice,” she stated.
Also present to welcome her were Evangelist Papa Shee, businessman Kennedy Agyapong (Kenpong) and members of Daddy Lumba’s family.
Her return comes nearly a month after the late Highlife icon was laid to rest at Heroes Park in Kumasi on 13 December 2025. Akosua Serwaa was absent from the burial due to unresolved family disagreements over funeral arrangements and traditional widowhood rites — a situation that has kept her in Germany until now.
