A Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) officer has been shòt deàd, and another left in critical condition after unidentified gunmen launched an attack at the Nangani checkpoint in the Tempane District of the Upper East Region.

The incident, which occurred between 10:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m., is believed to have been carried out by bandits linked to a drug smuggling syndicate operating within the Bawku area.

Local sources suggest that the attack was connected to an attempt to smuggle prescription drugs concealed in containers labeled as vegetable oil through the checkpoint.

The assailants reportedly ambushed the officers, fatally shòoting one and injuring another, before seizing their service weapons and escaping.

Security personnel have since been deployed to the area as investigations intensify to apprehend the perpetrators and restore calm.
