It's not too late to fix the broken EC- Omane Boamah
9th July 2025
Ghana’s Minister for Defence and outgoing Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Edward Omane Boamah, has issued a strong call for urgent bipartisan cooperation to address mounting concerns surrounding the country’s Electoral Commission (EC).
His comments follow the Commission’s announcement that elections will be rerun in 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency due to reported irregularities.
According to him, restoring the credibility of the Commission is not only possible, but essential if Ghana’s democracy is to remain intact.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, July 9, Dr Boamah acknowledged widespread dissatisfaction with the EC’s recent conduct but stressed that the situation is not beyond repair.
“It’s not too late…” he wrote, adding that restoring public confidence in the EC will require political maturity and a collective commitment to reform ahead of the pivotal 2024 general elections.
Dr Boamah appealed to all political stakeholders, particularly the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP)—to rise above partisan interests and work toward safeguarding Ghana’s democratic integrity.
“Let’s work together to fix the broken Electoral Commission and save Ghana’s democracy!” he said.
