Ghana's President, John Dramani Mahama, has announced that efforts are underway to address food shortages in senior high schools across the country.

Before the schools reopened, the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) had called for a delay in the reopening to allow the government time to resolve food supply issues.

The Parents-Teachers Association (PTA) also suggested that parents should bear the cost of feeding their children or send food with them to school.

During the National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service, President Mahama revealed that he had instructed the Chief of Staff to collaborate with the Ghana Education Service (GES) to ensure food provision for students.

He explained that the previous government had imported food items following a drought last year, and some of these supplies are now being redirected to senior high schools facing food shortages.

He further stated, "We are currently facing challenges in feeding secondary school students because the Ghana Education Service insisted on reopening schools on January 3, despite the advice from CHASS.

As a temporary solution, I have directed the Chief of Staff to work with GES to distribute food from warehouses in Tema.

This food, which was imported due to last year's drought, will now be used to feed students, ensuring education continues without disruption."
