Ghanaian rapper Kojo Cue has revealed that at the height of his battle with depression, he gave away all his studio equipment and stepped back from music entirely.

Speaking during the Joy Showbiz Roundtable discussion, the Never Mind rapper described the debilitating impact depression had on his creativity and everyday life.

“When I talk about depression, I'm talking about not wanting to see anybody, not wanting to do anything, not wanting to talk to anybody at any point in time. I gave away all my studio equipment, stopped recording music, didn’t want to engage with anything. I didn’t want to be a part of the day to day of life and living."

Cue explained that his decision to give away his gear symbolised how disconnected he had become from the things he once loved. He noted that depression stripped him of his passion and left him feeling emotionally paralyzed.

In seeking healing, the rapper turned to therapy, a journey he says helped him explore the deeper roots of his emotional struggles.

"Our sessions were mainly talking about my belings, why I feel like that, going back in time to also explore certain things that led me to that particular place, but then also
teaching me mindfulness, meditation practices, teaching me how to separate things that were happening to me from things that l was imagining, and how to be rooted in the now and in reality, and just how to notice when l'm having an episode so that Ill direct myself towards things that calm me down, things that bring me back to reality,"

Kojo Cue clarified that stepping away from music wasn’t suggested by his therapist but it was a decision he made on his own.

"No, I did that by myself. I just was not in a space where I could create anymore at all," he said.

Despite the personal and creative toll, Cue’s candid reflections highlight the importance of mental health awareness and the healing power of self-discovery.
