Ghanaian international, Lawrence Agyekum speaks about his idols whilst growing up and has heaped praises on Black Stars and Belgium Jupiler Pro League mate, Majeed Ashimeru.
The Black Stars goal scorer in the 4-0 hauling of Trinidad and Tobago at the 2025 Unity Cup games in London has asserted in an exclusive interview with 3Sports that he had some great players he looked up to whilst growing up, playing football on the streets of Ashaiman just like Black Stars deputy captain, Thomas Partey.
He noted that he used to be responding to the name "Lionel Messi" growing up until he had a significant shift in his development as he became the midfielder he is now when he idolised Spanish legend, Andres Lujan Iniesta.
When asked about his role models, Agyekum said with no hesitation; "Lionel Messi. But along the line, I think Andres Iniesta, when I changed position to the midfield, Andres Iniesta."
He also added that he usually takes advise from compatriot, Majeed Ashimeru who was his senior at the same development Academy in Ghana, the West African Football Academy (WAFA) before the latter left the shores of Ghana in 2017- five years before Lawrence also left. The both had the same path from WAFA to Salzburg before now plying their trade in Belgium.
"He went from WAFA to Leifering, to Salzburg, to Belgium. Me too, it was quite the same. And then we also have the same manager, Roland. We talk about a lot and he advises me a lot on what to do and what not to do."
The two played against each other in the round 30 of the Belgium Pro League where Lawrence started for his side, Cercle Brugge and played full throttle, whilst Majeed Ashimeru came on as substitute on the 74th minute and provided an assist in the dying embers of the game to cap a 3-0 victory for RSC Anderlecht.
In the annual offseason football event dubbed the "All Star Festival," both featured for the Southern Sector where Ashimeru scored in the 2-1 victory against the Northern Sector team.
