If the aim of the revamped UEFA Champions League format was to inject unpredictability, spectacle and sustained drama into Europe’s elite competition, then the 2025/26 season is already a resounding success.
The expanded league phase, introduced in 2024/25, has transformed the tournament into a rolling theatre of chaos, where every matchday feels decisive and the final crescendo of fixtures has become must-watch football across the continent.
The extended single-league phase, featuring more matches against a wider range of opponents, has ensured that traditional hierarchies are constantly challenged. Instead of predictable group narratives, fans have been treated to astonishing storylines that simply would not have unfolded under the old format. One of the most unforgettable moments came when Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin surged forward to score a last-gasp header against Real Madrid, a goal that kept the Portuguese giants alive in the competition and perfectly captured the high-stakes madness of the new system.
Equally remarkable has been the rise of Bodo-Glimt, who stunned Europe by racking up successive victories over both Manchester City and Atletico Madrid to storm into the playoff round. Their fearless attacking approach and relentless pressing embodied the spirit of a format that rewards ambition over reputation. They went even further in the playoffs, completely outplaying last season’s runners-up Inter Milan to claim a sensational 5-2 aggregate triumph.
The playoff round itself was a festival of goals and momentum swings. Galatasaray edged past Juventus 7-5 on aggregate in one of the most thrilling ties of the season, with Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen leading the line with power and precision. Elsewhere, Atalanta mounted a stirring comeback to eliminate Borussia Dortmund 4-3 on aggregate, while Newcastle United announced themselves as genuine contenders by crushing Qarabag 9-3 across two legs.
Individually, the tournament has been lit up by elite attacking talent. Kylian Mbappe currently leads the scoring charts with 13 goals, underlining his continued dominance on the biggest stage. He is being closely chased by Anthony Gordon (Newcastle) on 10 and Harry Kane (Bayern Munich) on eight, highlighting the attacking depth still to come as the knockout rounds intensify.
Now, the Round of 16 sees the top eight teams from the league phase re-enter the fray, setting up a series of blockbuster clashes. Newcastle versus Barcelona promises fireworks: Newcastle’s pace and directness could trouble the Catalans, but Barcelona’s control in possession may just give them a narrow edge over two legs. Galatasaray against Liverpool is another heavyweight encounter, with Liverpool’s European pedigree making them slight favourites, though Gala’s firepower makes this far from certain.
The standout tie may be defending champions Paris Saint-Germain against Chelsea, a repeat of the Club World Cup final won by the English side. PSG’s attacking flair could dominate the first leg, but Chelsea’s tactical discipline suggests a finely balanced duel likely to be settled by the smallest of margins. Meanwhile, the perennial rivalry between Real Madrid and Manchester City resumes, a fixture that has defined modern Champions League drama; Madrid’s knockout experience could prove decisive, but City’s tactical sophistication makes this a genuine 50-50 contest.
In this new era, the Champions League is no longer just about the giants cruising through familiar paths. It is a relentless, evolving spectacle where every match matters, every goal shifts destiny, and every round delivers unforgettable theatre.
