A 25-year-old man, Paul Avortide, popularly known as Tinted, has been sentenced to 19 years in prison with hard labour by the Ho Circuit Court after pleading guilty to robbing a pregnant woman at knifepoint.

The robbery occurred at around 4:00 a.m. on May 21, 2025, at Tsikpota near New Housing in Ho. Armed with a machete, Avortide attacked the victim, Ogechi Chidiebere, who was en route to the Ho Municipal Hospital for antenatal care.

He made away with GH¢3,000 and a Tecno Spark 30c smartphone worth GH¢2,500.

The Volta Regional Police Command launched investigations that led to the arrest of 23-year-old Harmony Nbonu, alias Arab Money, at the Ho Main Market on June 19.

He was found with the stolen phone and admitted to purchasing it from Avortide for GH¢850.

This breakthrough led officers to Avortide’s hideout in Matse, where he was arrested.

Charged with robbery under Section 149 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), Avortide was convicted on his own plea before Circuit Court Judge Osman Abdul Hakeem.

He was immediately sentenced to 19 years behind bars with hard labour.

Meanwhile, Nbonu, who faced a separate charge of dishonestly receiving under Section 146 of the same Act, was acquitted and discharged.

Avortide has since been transferred to the Ho Regional Prison to begin serving his sentence.
