Medeama book their place in Champions League group stage despite defeat to Horoya
1st October 2023

Medeama SC has secured qualification to the group stage of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League despite losing 2-1 to Guinea's Horoya AC in the second leg of the second-round qualifiers.
The Yellow and Mauves made history by becoming the first Ghanaian side to reach the group stage since 2012/13 when Berekum Chelsea represented Ghana at that level.
The Tarkwa-based team progressed with a 4-3 aggregate score over two legs, having won the first leg 3-1 in Cape Coast two weeks ago.
Ghanaian international Jonathan Sowah gave Medeama SC an early lead in the 24th minute through a penalty kick, but Mandela Ocansey equalized for Horoya with a fine finish just two minutes later.
Horoya added a second goal in the 76th minute to make it 2-1 for the hosts, but that did not deter the Ghanaian side as they kept their composure and held on until the final whistle.
Medeama began their Champions League journey with a 1-0 win over Nigerian side Remo Stars and qualified on penalties after losing by the same scoreline in the return leg.
