Medeama SC Board Chairman, Dr. Tony Aubynn, has acknowledged that while the newly built Tarkwa and Aboso (TNA) Park boasts a vibrant atmosphere, it does not meet the necessary requirements to host the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier between Ghana and Sudan in October.

This comes in the wake of the Confederation of African Football's (CAF) ban on the Baba Yara Stadium, which had previously served as the venue for the Black Stars' home games.

The ban has left Ghana scrambling for a suitable venue that meets CAF’s stringent requirements ahead of their crucial 2025 AFCON qualifiers.

Dr. Aubynn expressed his disappointment that the TNA Park, despite being a modern facility, falls short of CAF’s Category 3 standards, which require stadiums to have a minimum seating capacity of 30,000.

The TNA Stadium, with a capacity of just over 10,000, is unable to serve as an alternative venue for the national team.

Speaking to ChannelOne Sports, Dr. Aubynn voiced his frustration, saying, “At the moment in the country, I believe that the TNA Park is the best stadium.

Unfortunately, the size is not up to the level that we could host the Africa Cup (qualifiers) there. Otherwise, given the current challenge, we would have suggested that they play in Tarkwa.”

Ghana's national team now faces the challenge of finding a suitable venue that meets CAF’s standards as they prepare for the back-to-back AFCON qualifiers against Sudan next month.
