Police busts armed gang behind rural bank robberies
24th September 2025
The Ghana Police Service has broken up a notorious criminal gang accused of staging multiple armed robberies on rural banks across the country.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohonu confirmed that 10 suspects have been arrested, while three others were killed in a gun battle with officers.
A manhunt is ongoing for the remaining fugitives.
“After analysing robbery cases over the past year, we identified a recurring pattern targeting financial institutions, particularly rural banks. This led to an intelligence-led operation across several regions,” Dr. Yohonu explained.
The coordinated raids spanned Ahafo, Western, Central, Eastern, and Ashanti regions, with hotspots including Esereso Adagya, Ejisu Achiaakrom, Atonsu-Kyirapatre, Ahwia-Zongo, Kaase-BOST, Obuasi, and Buoho near Kronum.
Police credited informants, data analysis, and weeks of surveillance for the successful operation, describing it as a major blow to organised crime.
Recovered items include:
- 14 firearms (AK-47 rifles, pump-action shotguns, pistols, and a single-barrel gun)
- Large quantities of ammunition
- Vehicles, mobile phones, and tools suspected to have aided the robberies
The CID Director-General is expected to release further details on the suspects and evidence.
The IGP lauded the Ashanti Regional Police Command and its intelligence unit, as well as citizens who provided tip-offs.
“We will not rest until every suspect is accounted for. The police will reward credible information that advances investigations,” he assured.
Dr. Yohonu also issued a stern warning:
“We will continue to make life uncomfortable for criminals. Wherever you hide, you will be found, arrested, and brought to justice.”
