Lying in a hospital bed at the Police Hospital in Accra, Sergeant Samuel Akocha is fighting not just to recover from his physical wounds, but also to return to the uniformed duty he proudly swore to uphold.
The gallant police officer was shot in the chest and leg during a high-risk anti-robbery operation in the La area of Accra earlier this week.
Sgt. Akocha, a member of a rapid response team of the Police Service, was part of a group deployed to thwart an armed robbery in progress.
According to police accounts, the officers encountered fierce resistance from the robbers, resulting in a violent exchange of gunfire.
Amidst the chaos, Sgt. Akocha sustained serious injuries but held his ground, helping his team apprehend two suspects at the scene.
The remaining robbers managed to escape and are now being pursued by law enforcement.
On Friday, Interior Minister Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak visited Sgt. Akocha at his hospital bedside to commend his heroism.
The Minister described the officer as a symbol of courage and patriotism, noting that his actions exemplify the bravery that keeps communities safe.
“Despite suffering critical gunshot wounds, Sgt. Akocha remained committed to duty. His courage ensured that two suspects were arrested, and that is nothing short of heroic,” the Minister stated after the visit.
Muntaka, visibly moved by the officer’s condition, expressed heartfelt gratitude to him on behalf of the nation and assured him of the government’s full support during his recovery.
He also called on the medical team to spare no effort in providing the best care possible.
The shooting has drawn national attention and sparked widespread admiration for Sgt. Akocha’s selflessness.
Ghanaians across social media have hailed him as a national hero, with many calling for improved welfare and protective logistics for officers who risk their lives daily in the fight against crime.
