Seidu Mutawakilu open to Ghana Premier League return if right offer arrives
29th August 2025
Former Ghana U-20 goalkeeper Seidu Mutawakilu says he is ready to sign for any Ghanaian club provided a good contract is placed on the table.
The 30-year-old shot-stopper, who has played for both Asante Kotoko (at youth level) and Hearts of Oak (at senior level), has vast experience in the Ghana Premier League and beyond. He also had a stint with Dreams FC before moving to Nigeria, where he spent nine years across spells with Rangers International and Rivers United, before most recently playing for Akwa United.
Now a free agent following Akwa United’s relegation, Mutawakilu reflected on his time in the Ghana Premier League and the changing dynamics of player development in the country.
“There have been a lot of positives in playing in the league for some time but now, based on the salaries and how the agents work, within one or two years you see players leaving the shores of Ghana,” he told Radio Gold.
“During our time, there were a lot of experienced players who stayed for five or six years and brought maturity to the league. But now it’s rare to see players stay that long.”
When asked if he would consider returning to play in Ghana, Mutawakilu was emphatic.
“Yes, football is our work and apart from football we don’t have any other work doing. So if you give me a good offer and peace of mind, I will gladly sign.”
Mutawakilu, who was part Ghana’s goalkeepers at the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand, is currently weighing his options as he looks for the next chapter of his career.
