The Amansie West District Security Council (DISEC) has apprehended twenty-one foreign nationals, all identified as Burkinabes, for allegedly engaging in illegal mining activities on river bodies at Esaase Bontefufuo in the Ashanti Region.
The arrests were made during a special intelligence-led operation carried out by the District Police Command and the Formed Police Unit (FPU), under the leadership of ASP Solomon Adusei Berko.
ASP Berko revealed that the suspects were captured in a coordinated raid following credible intelligence about extensive environmental damage caused by illegal mining in the area.
“We acted swiftly after receiving reliable information and arrested twenty-one Burkinabes actively mining on the water bodies,” he stated.
Authorities also seized several mining tools and equipment during the operation.
According to ASP Berko, the illegal activities had caused severe destruction to vegetation, farmlands, and water bodies that serve as crucial drinking water sources for surrounding communities.
He warned that such environmental violations would not be tolerated, assuring residents of a sustained security presence in the area.
District Chief Executive for Amansie West and DISEC Chairman, Prince Manu Morris, commended the prompt action of the security forces and reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to eradicating illegal mining in the district.
He emphasized that DISEC would strengthen collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), and the Immigration Service to intensify surveillance.
“We will not allow the continued destruction of our environment. Whether local or foreign, anyone caught in such acts will face the full force of the law,” he stressed.
Mr. Morris also urged residents to assist authorities by reporting suspicious mining activities in their communities.
