In a thrilling start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Inaki Williams of Athletic Bilbao scored a decisive goal in injury time, propelling Ghana to a 1-0 victory against Madagascar at the Baba Yara Sports stadium.
The intensity of the match saw Jordan Ayew as the first to test the goalkeeper within the first 25 minutes, though Madagascar's defense held firm.
With Madagascar adopting a deep defensive strategy, the first half concluded without either team finding the back of the net.
In response, Ghana's coach Chris Hughton made strategic substitutions, bringing in Majeed Ashimeru and Denis Odoi for Baba Idrissu and Alidu Seidu, making Ghana more attacking-minded.
Despite several attempts, including a Mohammed Kudus shot parried away by the goalkeeper, and an offside ruling against Inaki Williams, Ghana persevered until the decisive moment in injury time.
Winger Ernest Nuamah entered the game in the 72nd minute, injecting energy and purpose into the Ghanaian attack. The crowd-driven momentum led Ghana to press forward, seeking to breach Madagascar's defense.
In the 81st minute, the Barea nearly turned the tables, hitting the crossbar with a header, and the rebound went wide, providing a close call for Ghana.
Inaki Williams, determined to end his goal drought, finally broke through in the 95th minute.
A well-placed cross from left-back Gideon Mensah found Williams, who delivered a powerful header from close range, securing the victory and marking his first goal in 12 appearances.
