Workers of the Ghana Bauxite Company Limited have set ablaze a vehicle as well as some properties of the company in a violent protest on Monday June 17 2019 at  Awaso in the Bibiani–Anyaaso- Bekwai Municipality of the newly created Western North Region.

According to sources, the workers were protesting over poor working conditions as well as meagre salaries.

The chaotic nature of the protest resulted in the burning of other stuffs including the office of the Human Resource Manager, George Ampong.

A local journalist by the name Samuel Awuku while narrating the incident said, “Yesterday we heard about the Awaso Bauxite company and the agitation coming from workers over there. Yesterday they took the law into their hands and burnt the office of the HR Manager. As we speak the security men are on the ground trying to protect people and property.

“They are also trying to ensure that the place is calm. For now, the leadership of the company are all locked up in a meeting, he added.”

The Municipal Security Council is meeting over the issue.

Earlier in March 2019, workers of the Bauxite Mining Company had threatened to walk off the job unless their working conditions are improved.
