On the morning of March 5, it was reported that the official website of Bharatiya Janata Party was hacked.A message was quickly posted after the hack on the site which read, “We’ll be back soon! Sorry for the inconvenience but we’re performing some maintenance at the moment. we’ll be back online shortly!” That was almost 10 days back and the site continues to show the same message.

Interestingly, there have been conflicting versions from the ruling party on the issue. Amit Malviya, the IT Cell head of BJP, last week said that it wasn’t a hack but a “technical glitch” behind the site being down. However, IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad did admit that the website was indeed hacked. Prasad said that the site was hacked for a few minutes but the party was able to get control back “very soon.” He also said that there are rogue elements in the society who were behind such attacks.

Initially when the hacked was site, there were a few memes that were put on the official website. The memes had pictures of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Angela Merkel, the German chancellor.

Till now it hasn’t been made clear by when the site can be expected to be up and running. Since the website was hacked and has been down, the Election Commission of India announced the dates of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The elections will be held in seven phases across the state, starting April 11. The last phase of voting will conclude on May 19. With social media a critical part of political parties’ campaign strategy, it will be interesting by when does BJP get its site up and running and if it comes back in a new avatar.
