2025 AFCON: Gomis backs Senegal ahead of semi-final clash with Egypt
13th January 2026
Former France international Bafétimbi Gomis has thrown his support behind Senegal as they prepare for a heavyweight Africa Cup of Nations semi-final against Egypt.
Gomis, who enjoyed a distinguished club career with Lyon, Swansea City and Galatasaray, visited the Lions of Teranga camp in Morocco following a trip to Fifa’s offices in Rabat. The former striker later shared his impressions on social media, praising the atmosphere and togetherness within the squad.
“Supported by over 18 million Senegalese, this team is experiencing the Africa Cup of Nations with exceptional energy and passion,” Gomis wrote on X. “I saw a united and focused group, driven by demanding management and a true team spirit.”
He added: “All my best wishes to Senegal as they strive to achieve this goal and lift this major trophy.”
Gomis was welcomed by officials from the Senegal Football Federation and members of the technical team, and spent time speaking with senior players as well as younger talents, offering encouragement as the tournament reaches its decisive stage.
Although born in France and capped 12 times by the French national team and scoring three goals, Gomis was eligible to represent Senegal through his ancestry. Despite choosing Les Bleus, he has maintained strong ties with African football and has often spoken warmly about Senegal.
The Teranga Lions face Egypt on Wednesday at the Ibn Batouta Stadium in Tangier, in what promises to be a fiercely contested semi-final. It is the latest chapter in a growing rivalry between two of Africa’s football heavyweights, with Senegal hoping to take another step towards lifting the AFCON trophy once again.
