On their own, it will be near impossible to say that another Ghanaian highlife musician has been better than Kojo Antwi or Daddy Lumba in the last 30 years.

The task proves more difficult to compare who is better of the two. This is because apart from what seems like huge continental appreciation, both Lumba and Antwi are brilliant lyricists and composers.

But this writer is sticking his head out for Kojo Antwi. We will be making a case to show that Antwi is the better of the two musicians because of four reasons.

1. Antwi is a better all-rounder than Lumba

We can grant that lyrically, Daddy Lumba is a heavyweight. What is however unfortunate is that Lumba songs are rather typically sensual and sarcastic.

Antwi is known for pure love songs but he adds a wider range of songs and most of them are hits. Nkwanta Basaa easily comes to mind.

2. Kojo Antwi is a better composer.

We can continue to grant that Lumba is the better lyricist. But as far as music composition comes, we cannot accept that Antwi is inferior.

Songs like Mmrika, Afoafanto and Adiepena are probably the best examples for Antwi's case. In those songs, he expresses an understanding of how rhythm communicates the spirit of the song he is singing.

3. Kojo Antwi is a more recognised act among other Africans

Kojo Antwi can count on his KORA Music award and BET nominations as reasons to say he has a better appeal with non-Ghanaians. And he will be right.

Daddy Lumba seems to appeal to Ghanaians, in and out of the country. And that is not a bad thing except non-Ghana can be more impartial judges of the two.
