The Electoral Commission (EC) has refuted allegations of political bias surrounding its decision to conduct a rerun of the parliamentary election in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North constituency.

This follows accusations mainly from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that the Commission is acting in favour of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). The rerun is scheduled for Thursday, July 11. In protest, the NPP has announced its withdrawal from the election, describing the EC’s decision as “unjust.”

However, the party’s parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, has broken ranks with the NPP leadership and declared her intention to participate in the rerun. Legal and administrative efforts by the NPP to halt the process have so far proved unsuccessful.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Thursday, July 10, the EC’s Deputy Chairman for Corporate Services, Dr. Bossman Asare, stressed that the Commission remains impartial and committed to upholding democratic principles.

“We state categorically that Ghana’s electoral management body is an independent body and will not be dictated to by any institution or any person. Our track record speaks for itself,” he stated.”

The rerun follows disputes over the initial results in selected polling stations, which the EC says warranted fresh voting to ensure transparency and fairness in the electoral process.
