Attacks on journalists will not be tolerated– IGP ahead of Akwatia polls
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno has reaffirmed the Ghana Police Service’s commitment to ensuring the safety of journalists covering the upcoming Akwatia by-election, scheduled for September 2, 2025.
His assurance comes in response to growing concerns over journalists safety, following a string of recent incidents, most notably, the assault of a GHOne TV reporter by a police officer during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun on July 17.
Speaking at a meeting with the leadership of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in Accra on Wednesday, August 20, the IGP pledged full cooperation with the media.
“We’re ready to work with you. I can assure you that Akwatia will be very safe. We will protect you. No policeman will attack you; we are there to protect you. It is our duty to protect you. We’re assuring you that these things will not happen,” the IGP said.
To strengthen police-media relations, he proposed the introduction of joint training sessions for police officers and journalists, aimed at fostering mutual understanding during election coverage.
The Akwatia by-election was triggered by the recent passing of the area’s Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi.
