The Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association has announced that it will begin a campaign on Monday, September 8, 2025, aimed at ensuring strict adherence to the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) Act, 2013 (Act 865).

In a statement signed by the Association’s Director of Communications, Takyi Addo, the initiative will specifically target Section 27(1) of the Act, which prohibits non-citizens from engaging in petty trading, hawking, or selling goods in stalls and markets.

The Association expressed concern over the continued presence of foreign traders in spaces such as Abossey Okai, despite the legal restrictions, arguing that this undermines the livelihoods of local traders and weakens indigenous entrepreneurship.

“Successive governments have failed to ensure full enforcement of this Act, resulting in a persistent drain on the businesses of Ghanaian traders. The time has come to uphold the law and protect local enterprise from unlawful competition,” the statement read.

While the Association emphasised that it is not opposed to foreign investment in Ghana, it stressed that such investments must align with the country’s trade laws to ensure fairness and the protection of local businesses.

The group also called on relevant state institutions and stakeholders to collaborate in supporting the exercise, underscoring the importance of preserving the integrity of local trade and securing a sustainable future for Ghanaian businesses.
