Family seeks justice over mysterious death of Ghanaian student in Latvia
The family of the late Nana Agyei Ahyia, a Ghanaian student who died under mysterious circumstances in Latvia in June 2025, has renewed its call for justice and a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of All Souls’ Day at the Lashibi Funeral Homes and Crematorium on Sunday, November 2, 2025, family spokesperson Jake Yancson Quansah said that although the family has received a response from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs following their petition, they are still seeking closure.
“Fortunately, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has finally granted us an audience. They wrote to the authorities in Latvia, demanding further investigation into the cause of our child’s death. We are grateful for that, but the family remains in grief because an unresolved murder cannot grant us peace,” he said.
Mr. Quansah added that the family expects the same sense of urgency and commitment that would be shown if the situation were reversed.
“I do not see an instance where a Latvian citizen would be murdered in cold blood, nor do I believe the government of Latvia would go to sleep. That would be an injustice against that country. The same principle should apply to Ghana, and we may have to use this platform to appeal again that justice is all we ask for.”
Some relatives disclosed that they have also petitioned Parliament and are appealing for the intervention of President John Dramani Mahama to ensure that justice is served.
Another family member, Prince Philip Kelly-Walter, expressed disappointment over the slow pace of investigations.
“It is so disheartening to know that up till now, nothing positive has come out of the investigation. We are just asking the government to do everything possible to ensure that justice is served so that we, as family members, can be at peace. It is not fair,” he said.
