Armed robbery suspects nabbed in Kumasi after weeks of intelligence work on Upper East highway gang

Two men believed to be key members of a violent robbery syndicate that has been terrorising communities across the Upper East and North East regions have been tracked down and arrested in Kumasi, following an intensive weeks-long surveillance operation by the Ghana Police Service.
Moses Akungoe — widely known as “Mosbee” — and Jacob Akugri, who goes by the alias “Weezy,” were picked up in Kumasi on Friday, May 9, 2026, by operatives from the Criminal Investigations Department Headquarters Operations Unit.
Their arrests came at the end of a painstaking intelligence-gathering effort centred on Bolgatanga and Walewale, where the gang is believed to have carried out a string of attacks on road users and residents alike.
According to police, the pair are suspected of belonging to an organised robbery network that preyed on victims along the Bolgatanga-Walewale highway and within surrounding communities, stripping them of cash, mobile phones and motorbikes.
Investigators believe some of the gang’s operations turned fatal, with a number of the robbery incidents resulting in deaths.
The use of heavy weaponry has also emerged as a feature of the group’s activities, with police suspecting the gang deployed AK-47 rifles and pistols during its raids — a level of armament that signals a well-resourced and dangerous criminal operation.
With Mosbee and Weezy now in custody, attention has shifted to dismantling the broader network.
Investigators say they are actively working to identify and round up the remaining members of the suspected syndicate as the probe continues.
