From Aboutrika to Abutrica — The Story Behind the Name That Has Everyone Talking

He is one of Ghana’s most recognisable internet personalities, a man whose name alone sparks conversation. But who exactly is Abutrica, and where did that distinctive name come from? In a revealing interview with Onua TV’s Captain Smart, Frederick Kumi finally set the record straight.
Speaking candidly, the social media personality disclosed that his widely known alias was inspired by none other than Egyptian football legend Mohammed Aboutrika — one of Africa’s most celebrated players and a figure revered across the continent for both his footballing brilliance and his character off the pitch.
“I got the name Abutrica from Egyptian footballer legend Mohammed Aboutreika,” he revealed, drawing a clear line between his adopted identity and the iconic player who unknowingly lent his name to one of Ghana’s most talked-about online figures.
The interview also cleared up another long-standing point of confusion surrounding his identity.
Kumi firmly rejected the name Emmanuel Adu Baah, which has been attributed to him by authorities, insisting that it does not reflect who he is.
“My name is not Emmanuel Adu Baah as indicated by authorities,” he stated plainly.
For many Ghanaians who have followed Abutrica’s rise across social media platforms, the interview offered a rare and personal glimpse into the man behind the persona — a figure who has built a significant following through his distinctive online presence and whose real story turns out to be just as intriguing as the character he has come to embody.
