Jordan Ayew has described captaining Ghana as both a privilege and a responsibility as the Black Stars continue their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The experienced forward, who has emerged as one of the senior figures in the national team, said he embraces the role with humility and a focus on serving his teammates and country.

Speaking to FIFA, Ayew said wearing the captain’s armband is an honour he does not take lightly.

“Obviously, it’s an honour and a big responsibility. I just take it calmly and do my best for the country and for my teammates,” he said.

The Leicester City striker explained that his leadership style is built on unity, support and ensuring every member of the squad is ready to contribute when called upon.

“I always put them first and try to do my best for them. For everyone to be happy and for everybody to be ready for each game,” Ayew added.

Unlike captains who thrive on commanding dressing rooms, Ayew said he prefers a calm and natural approach, allowing him to handle the pressures of leadership without becoming overwhelmed.

“I take it day by day. I’m just a chilled person, I’m natural. I just deal with things as they come,” he said.

Ayew’s influence is expected to be crucial as Ghana seeks to secure a successful campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Black Stars are aiming to make a deep run in the tournament and reach the knockout stages for the first time since their memorable quarter-final appearance in 2010.

With a blend of experienced players and emerging talent in the squad, Ayew’s steady leadership could prove vital as Ghana looks to re-establish itself among football’s elite on the global stage.
