A 26-year-old Ghanaian lawyer has died after reportedly suffering a cardiac arrest while celebrating Ghana’s 1-0 victory over Panama in the Black Stars’ opening match at the FIFA World Cup.

Sara Araba Tettey, a newly qualified lawyer and alumna of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Faculty of Law, is said to have collapsed moments after the final whistle on Wednesday, 17 June, as jubilant celebrations erupted among football fans.

According to eyewitnesses, Ms Tettey had been watching the match with friends at Standard Hostel in Bomso, near the KNUST campus in Kumasi, when she suddenly became unresponsive.

Friends rushed her to the KNUST Hospital, where medical personnel reportedly performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for approximately 45 minutes in an effort to save her life. Despite their efforts, she was pronounced dead.

Ms Tettey had recently been called to the Ghana Bar and had begun her legal career with O & A Legal Consult, where colleagues described her as a promising and dedicated young lawyer.

News of her sudden death has sent shockwaves through Ghana’s legal fraternity, particularly among colleagues from KNUST, the Ghana School of Law and fellow members of the Bar, many of whom had only recently celebrated her admission into the legal profession.

Friends and former classmates have paid tribute to her on social media, describing her as intelligent, compassionate and hardworking, with a bright future ahead.

Her body has been deposited at the KNUST Hospital mortuary, where an autopsy is expected to determine the exact cause of death. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by her family in due course.
