I stay humble – Caleb Yirenkyi on scoring the winner against Panama

Ghana’s match-winner Caleb Yirenkyi has insisted that his dramatic late goal against Panama is secondary to the team’s collective ambition after helping the Black Stars begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a victory.
The 20-year-old midfielder struck in the 95th minute to seal a 1-0 win in Toronto, but rather than celebrate his individual achievement, Yirenkyi was quick to praise his teammates and the work that went into the result.
“I’m very positive. Not just me, my teammates also,” he said after the match.
“We have one goal, and that is to do our best in this tournament. I think that’s what we showed today.”
Yirenkyi also revealed that the winning goal was no coincidence, saying it came from a move the team had rehearsed throughout their preparations.
“We won the ball back. I just tried to play forward and then run forward. I got the ball in the box and finished,” he said.
“That’s what we’ve been practising since we started our preparation. Get the ball to the wings, put it in the box and make runs. Today we had the chance to finish one.”
Despite scoring the decisive goal on his FIFA World Cup debut, the FC Nordsjaelland midfielder stressed that he remains grounded and determined to contribute even more as the tournament progresses.
“The feeling is great, but I stay humble. I want to do more for the team and the country. We all hope for the best, not just for myself, but for everyone.”
With Ghana now preparing for a crucial Group L clash against England, Yirenkyi said the Black Stars will remain focused on their collective objective, taking the competition one game at a time.
