It has emerged as "completely false" the claims by Mrs. Ursula Owusu Ekufful that the digital tax rate in the United Kingdom (UK) is higher compared to Ghana.

At a town hall meeting in Koforidua on Thursday, January 27, 2022, Ursula Owusu said the 1.7% Ghana’s electronic transactions levy (e-levy) was lower than the rate of digital tax in the UK which she claimed was 10%.

"In other countries, digital taxes are being introduced at the rate of up to 10% and they’re paying. That’s the UK. And we go there and seek loans from them to finance our development. When we are not paying the requisite taxes that we should," she said.

But, Ghana’s independent digital fact-checking project - Fact Check Ghana, has swiftly verified this and the verdict says Ursula Owusu's claims were "completely false".

According to Fact Check Ghana, the UK government introduced a 2% digital services tax in April 2020, not 10%.

It explained, "Unlike Ghana’s E-Levy tax, the UK digital service tax is not targeted at individual or citizen’s personal electronic transactions. The tax is expected to raise revenues from Large multi-national enterprises with revenue derived from the provision of social media services, search engines or online marketplace to UK users."

Reacting to the exposé, however, political activist Kwame A Plus remarked that Madam Ursula Owusu is a pathological liar and teases her with Burning Spear's popular lyrics - 'Christopher Columbus is a damn blasted liar'.

"Christopher Columbus is a woman in Ghana and she has been caught pants down!!" A Plus posted the song on his Facebook page in mockery of the Minister.
