The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), in partnership with the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly, has launched a major decongestion exercise today, Tuesday, May 20, 2025.

This is aimed at clearing key areas within the Central Business District (CBD) of unauthorized trading activities and traffic obstructions.

The operation will initially target areas surrounding the AMA Head Office, including Kinbu Road to Railways, ECG Junction to the King Tackie Tawiah Statue, and Opera Square to Adabraka.

Speaking to the media on Monday, May 19, AMA Public Relations Officer, Gilbert Ankrah, outlined the full scope of the exercise.

He stated that the operation would intensify along key routes, stretching from Wato Junction through King Tackie Tawiah School to Cow Lane—areas known for persistent congestion and illegal street trading.
“The plan is straightforward, with the main focus on the areas surrounding the AMA Head Office. All zones within that enclave will be addressed. Attention will also be given to the Accra City Hotel and Mövenpick Hotel areas,” he said.

He added that the exercise would intensify along major corridors such as Wato Junction through King Tackie Tawiah School to Cow Lane, known hotspots for street vending and congestion.

Ahead of the operation, AMA Chief Executive Michael Kpakpo Allotey met with street hawkers in the CBD to appeal for their cooperation and support.
“I am pleading with you to assist us in cleaning up the city and restoring order. We all want a better and more organised environment, and cooperation is vital in achieving that goal,” he said.
