The footballing world was gripped with fear and sorrow on Saturday when Denmark faced Finland in the ongoing Euro 2020 tournament in Europe when Denmark and Inter Milan midfielder Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest.

Eriksen collapsed on the pitch unchallenged as he was all alone and it had to take the swift intervention of medics in the stadium to try and resuscitate him with a defibrillator and also by conducting a cardiopulmonary resuscitation(CPR) on him.

Speaking on the issue a Sports Physician and a member of CAF’s medical team, Dr Prince Pamboe says that when this situation should happen in our domain the Ghana Ambulance Service have the expertise to respond to such case as they have been trained on how to arrest a cardiac attack by performing CPR but adds that it is only staff in Accra and Kumasi venues who can perform CPR.

“If this happened in Ghana, our colleagues will also do the same. In some time past, we met with the Ghana Ambulance Service to train them on how to respond to situations like this.

“The Ghana Ambulance Service is equipped to carry out this with at the Accra Sports Stadium, and Kumasi and any player would have been saved if it happens there but for the other venues I don’t know, he told Happy FM.

He advised clubs at other venues across the country to collaborate with the Ghana Ambulance Service so that they can be trained on CPR.

“We have told the clubs to be responsible with the Ambulance service at their regions and team up with them. And referees have been told not to start games when they do not see this health personnel over there.

“A fan had a cardiac arrest at the Accra Sports Stadium and we were able to resuscitate him even before we got to the hospital. Every club must have a responsible and equipped medical team. Players must also have that knowledge to resuscitate their colleagues when these things happen”, he added.
