Member of Parliament for Afram Plains North, Worlase Kpeli, has called for a comprehensive review and restructuring of Ghana’s broadcasting sector.
His comments follow President John Mahama’s recent directive to the National Communications Authority (NCA) to reinstate the licences of 64 radio stations that were suspended over regulatory breaches.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on Channel One Newsroom on Thursday, June 12, Mr. Kpeli cited a statement by Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George, which revealed that although over 600 radio stations are licensed in Ghana, many remain inactive.
According to him, the hoarding of unused frequencies by certain individuals stifles growth in the media industry and grants undue control to a select few.
“The spectrum has become so choked, and some have the licence and the waves and do not use them, for what reason they keep them, no one knows."
“It is not good for business, it is not good for the media as the fourth estate of the country, as we see now. It means it is hijacked by some people who think they have the power to acquire it and leave it unused," he said.
