Ghanaian defender Alidu Seidu sustained a serious knee injury during Stade Rennais' Ligue 1 clash with Lille on Sunday evening.

The Black Stars right-back was forced to exit the game in the 17th minute after an awkward landing led to a rupture of the cruciate ligaments in his left knee.

Seidu, who received extensive on-field treatment before being substituted by Senegalese defender Mikayil Faye, was later seen on crutches, raising concerns about the gravity of his condition.

Head coach Jorge Sampaoli confirmed that the defender would undergo scans on Monday to ascertain the full extent of the injury. "I can't diagnose; we will do tests tomorrow," Sampaoli remarked during the post-match conference.

The match itself ended on a sour note for Rennes, with Lille securing a narrow 1-0 victory thanks to Edon Zhegrova’s first-half strike at the Decathlon Arena-Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

Seidu’s injury marks a significant setback for both Rennes and the Ghana national team.

The 24-year-old, who joined Rennes in January 2024, has been pivotal to the squad and was recently named the club’s Player of the Month for September.

This injury adds to his challenges this season, having already missed Ghana's Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Niger due to a previous knock.

The defender now faces an uncertain recovery period, with fans and teammates hopeful for positive news following Monday's medical evaluation.
