The Senegalese Football Federation has officially parted ways with head coach Aliou Cissé after a nine-year tenure marked by significant achievements but recent underperformance.

Cissé's contract was terminated following disappointing results from the Teranga Lions, particularly their inability to defend their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title during the 2023 tournament held in Ivory Coast, where the team was eliminated in the Round of 16.

This disappointing exit placed immense pressure on the 48-year-old coach.

Under Cissé’s management, Senegal managed to secure only four points in the qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Criticism from the Senegalese media intensified after the team was held to a 1-1 draw against Burkina Faso and narrowly defeated Burundi with a late penalty in the 78th minute.

The growing dissatisfaction with the team's performances ultimately led the Senegalese Football Federation to end their relationship with Cissé.

Moving forward, reports suggest that the federation is keen to prioritize local coaches in their search for a new head coach, especially as they prepare for a crucial double-header against Malawi during the upcoming international break.

Cissé was appointed in 2015 and achieved remarkable success, including leading Senegal to their first-ever AFCON victory in 2021 and securing two consecutive FIFA World Cup qualifications in 2018 (Russia) and 2022 (Qatar).

His contributions to Senegalese football will be remembered, but the federation now seeks a new direction as they aim to regain their competitive edge on the continental stage.
