Iran is entitled to develop its deterrent missile power just like any other country, says an academic, adding that the West’s approach to possession and use of weapons is hypocritical.

“Well of course there are many opinions on this. Everybody would be in agreement that we need to live in a world without weapons but the realistic situation that we are in in terms of real politics is that weapons manufacture and use of weapons is escalating. Iran of course has a right to defend itself just as any other nation but the problem we have is the hypocrisy that we are seeing from the US, from the West in general, from NATO, in terms of not just possessing weapons but in the use of them,” Kenneth Fero, lecturer at Coventry University, told Press TV in an interview on Saturday.

“We live in a world where weapons are being used and weapons will continue to be used until we get to the situation where there is a division between the use of weapons and political discussions. Unfortunately the treaties are used in a way to try and control and renegotiate and also to put political and economic pressure on countries which the United States, NATO has disagreements with. So the weapons issue is part of the political issue, is part of the battle for the hearts and minds of people not just in Iran but in the United States and all over,” he added.

Iran unveils a long-range surface-to-surface missile amid celebrations for the 40th anniversary of the 1979 Islamic revolution.

Iran has unveiled a surface-to-surface missile with a range of more than 1,350 kilometers during celebrations marking the 40th anniversary of the 1979 Islamic revolution.

The missile, named Hoveyzeh after a city in southwest Iran known for its resistance during the 1980s Iraqi war, was showcased at an exhibition of defense achievements in Tehran on Saturday.

Tehran has reiterated that its missiles are defensive and used for deterrence in the face of repeated foreign threats. The country has said it will not negotiate on its missile capabilities under any circumstances.

Last September, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said that a military war against Iran was out of question, but called on the country's Armed Forces to boost their capabilities.  Source: presstv.com
