NEW DELHI: Apple is reportedly facing a wrongful death lawsuit in New Jersey, US, after a man died in a fire allegedly caused by iPad. According to a report in Patently Apple, the lawsuit filed in the US District Court for the District of New Jersey, the man, named Bradley Ireland, died due to injuries following a fire which started after his iPad burst into flames. The incident happened on February 22, 2017.
The lawsuit has been filed by his daughter Julia Ireland Meo and son Benjamin Ireland. It says that a defect in the iPad, specifically affecting its battery pack, led to the fire. It pins direct blame on Apple for the fire.

"The subject tablet was unreasonably dangerous and unsafe for its intended purpose by reasons of defects in its design and/or its manufacture and/or a lack of adequate warnings which existed when Defendant Apple placed the subject tablet into the stream of commerce and/or when Defendant distributed and/or sold 'updates' to the subject tablet," the suit alleges.

The suit lists three counts against Apple, these include: Strict Products Liability; Wrongful Death; and Survival Action. It seeks unspecified damages from the company.

In August 2018, battery of an iPad exploded inside Apple's Amsterdam retail store. However, such incidents have largely been isolated.

The most severe incidents relating to smartphone battery explosions were reported in 2016 when Samsung was forced to recall its Galaxy Note 7 phablet after a series of explosions. The South Korean giant stopped all sales and shipments of the device. The company worked with government agencies and telecom operators around the world to give refunds and exchanges for Galaxy Note 7.
