Arsenal insider Charles Watts has indicated that the Gunners are prioritizing the strengthening of their midfield depth in preparation for next summer, given the uncertainties surrounding the futures of Thomas Partey and Jorginho.
Both players have been integral to the team's performance this season, with Arsenal currently just one point behind Premier League leaders Liverpool after seven matches.
As their contracts are set to expire at the end of the season, speculation about their long-term roles at the club has intensified.
Partey has consistently filled the No. 6 role, while Jorginho has provided reliable support as needed.
In an interview with Caught Offside, Watts stated, “Arsenal are looking at midfield options ahead of the summer, with the futures of Jorginho and Thomas Partey very much in doubt right now.”
He mentioned that Ederson’s name might have come up in discussions due to his recent form, but added, “I can’t say for certain whether he is a player they are seriously considering as an option right now. It’s just too early at the moment for that.”
Watts acknowledged Ederson's talent, noting, “He’s shown that with Atalanta and he’s now starting to get some opportunities with Brazil as well.
Whether that’s enough to convince Arsenal to join the race for him, however, we’ll have to wait and see.”
Partey joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid in October 2020 for a transfer fee of £45 million (€50 million) and has made over 100 appearances for the club.
He was a crucial part of the squad that secured the Community Shield in 2023.
As the season progresses, it will be interesting to see how Arsenal navigates their midfield situation and whether they bring in new talent to bolster their options.
