Farmers at Assin South district of the Central region have appealed to government to step in to save their farms from destruction by stray elephants from the Kakum National Park.

According to the local farmers attempts to get the district assembly and the Wild life division in the area to help stop the rampant invasion and destruction of their farms by the elephants have proven futile leaving them frustrated in their farming activities.

They said the crop-raiding by the stray animals has destroyed large acreage of their crop especially cocoa farms. There are also some reports of casualties as several farmers have been injured in their attempt to drive away the elephants from destroying their farms.
The elephant invasion and subsequent destruction of their farms, according to the farmers , has rendered them poor with very little to live on following the destruction of their farms.

The farmers who are from communities like Nsupanim , Kyekyewere and its environs have therefore called on government institute some measures to stop the elephants from destroying their farms or risk their participation in the upcoming elections as they won’t waste their time to queue and vote for leaders who don’t have their welbeing at heart, the frustrated local farmers said in an interview with Kasapa FM’s Central regional correspondent Kwaku Baah -Acheamfour when he visited some of the destroyed farms.
