Maize farmers in the Atebubu/Amantin Municipality have raised concerns over a sharp decline in maize prices and are calling on the government to intervene to prevent further losses.

According to the Chairman of the Atebubu Area Farmers Association, Dickson Williams Agyei, the market price of maize in the area has fallen drastically, with the cost of a bag dropping from GH¢1,200 to GH¢400.

He made the remarks at the association’s New Year meeting held in Atebubu, warning that the price slump has pushed many farmers into debt.

Agyei said farmers are now struggling to recover their production costs, adding that some have begun considering abandoning maize cultivation altogether in response to the persistent price decline.

He cautioned that failure to address the situation promptly could lead to the collapse of maize production in the municipality, with serious consequences for food security, as many households in the area rely heavily on maize as a staple crop.

The association chairman appealed to the government to support farmers with subsidised inputs and improved seedlings to help revive production and keep them in business. He also called on authorities to explore export opportunities to stabilise prices and provide sustainable markets for maize farmers in the area.
