The Minority is still standing its ground against New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s challenge to face the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Mahama in a debate.

This comes after Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin in Parliament urged Mr Mahama to accept the challenge.

Dr Bawumia has challenged Mr Mahama to a debate ahead of the December polls but the 2024 Mahama Campaign Team has declined the offer, arguing that nothing is left to debate about the economy and insisting that Mahama does not need a debate to sell his message.

Speaking on the floor, Ayawaso North legislator advised the Vice President to rather meet the members of the media to answer pertinent questions first if he indeed seeks to argue with the NDC leader

Yussif Jajah explained that Mr. Mahama already hosted the media some weeks ago and that Dr. Bawumia must pass that test before his request may be considered by the opposition party.

“It is in that direction that I’m also appealing to him, to call his flagbearer to to appear before the journalists of Ghana. At least, he should meet the press and listen to them, listen to their questions. When he passes that test, we can now decide whether to meet him or not,” he told Mr Afeny-Markin on July 24.

“For now he has the test to meet the Ghanaian press, once he crosses that bridge we can decide to meet him or not.

Adaklu MP, Kwame Governs Agbodza also backed this assertion.

“The people who really debate him are out there. He should debate the people of this country. President Mahama is just one individual. Debate the millions of people who are struggling under the hands of the Vice President and then we will get there.”

“If you can actually advise your flagbearer to just meet journalists who are not 32 million people to just talk to them… just a few of the journalists… meet them and don’t cook the questions, allow them to ask proper questions and you will see how it will go,” said Mr Agbodza.

Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson cemented these points by suggesting that the NPP flagbearer is only fit to debate Isaac Adongo, Kweku Ricketts-Hagan and Thomas Nyarko Ampem.
