Seventeen people have been arrested by the police in Bimbila following Thursday’s chieftaincy violence that left two people killed.

Hospital authorities at Bimbila have said casualty from the unfortunate incident in the Nanumba North district capital has risen to eight including innocent little children.

There’s currently heavy security presence made up of military and police officers to maintain law and order in the town which has been placed under a 4pm to 6am curfew.

Gunfire erupted in Bimbilla the Northern region on Thursday in a suspected chieftaincy conflict which left schools and other business activities coming to a halt.

One house belonging to a subchief was reportedly set ablaze while scores raced indoors.

There were gunshots on a gathering of mourners whom residents say was performing funeral ceremony and allegedly fired a local weapon in line with tradition though there is a complete ban on carrying ammunition and firearms in the region.

Other residents however told Kasapa News that the gathering was ‘illegally installing a subchief’ and that the gunshots was to interrupt the ceremony.

Violence returned to Bimbilla in 2014 after a contestant in the longstanding kinship battle between members of the Gbugmayili gate was assassinated.

Police say more than 12 persons were killed and several properties damaged after some meat sellers broke custom by refusing to offer sacrifices to  Yakubu Dasana Andani whose legitimacy they challenged.
